A certain organization initiated a survey about productivity
sometime in September 2010. The report is still available online. The
report says, "On the average, people perceived dinner with family or
friends, quiet reflection/writing, and reading a non-fiction book as
slightly more productive, than doing the work your employer pays you to
do".
What this statement means to these companies? It simply means, there is a serious productivity issue in the companies where the survey respondents came from! The issue of productivity is a complex subject and is beyond the scope of this article.
But there are simple reasons on why productivity is so important.
Here they are;
1. Meeting commitment to customers
In business, the customer is the very reason on why it exists. Business owners know this very well. Nothing is far from the truth about it. When you miss your commitment to your customers most of the time, your business is in danger. The obvious reason is that the customer got disappointed and starts to look somewhere else who can serve them better than you do. This is why productivity is so important.
2. Lower operation cost
One of the many benefits of being productive is you spend less money for the items you produced. This is in the form of lesser overtime pay, lesser material scraps attributed to environmental conditions due to unnecessary longer storage period, just to name a few. Also, you do not need an extra resource to do the same kind of job. In short, lower cost in running the business.
3. Save money to re-invest on productivity projects
How does being productive can save you money? One obvious reason is less material loss. When productivity is higher, the operation is more predictable in terms of the cycle-time in producing a product. Aside from lesser material loss, you will have enough capacity to take in more orders if needed, in the same timeframe. Putting losses aside, more orders mean more revenue.
4. Increase morale of employees
Nobody likes a work where you have a lot of rework to do to get things done. Stress is the last thing you want to have in your work. If you are highly productive, typically you feel good about yourself and may even wanted to take on more responsibilities as a result. If I have done a lot of things according to my list of activities, I really feel good going back home and motivated to come to work the following day.
5. Ability to focus on vital few than trivial many
Another benefit of being productive is that, you have more time to focus on vital issues you have at hand. For the business owner, he will have time to focus more on important things like planning for the growth of the company and so on. This is definitely better than being stuck in a series of daily meetings to understand and resolve a variety of issues.
