By Nichole Cunningham

The term sexual abuse can be interrupted in many different ways. But, regardless of how the term is interrupted it means the same thing. This form of abusive behavior involves a victim and a dominant figure that takes advantage of the victim in a forceful sexual manner. The entire endeavor can scar a person for the rest of their lives. Learning how to overcome sexual abuse can be the hardest thing that a victim will ever have to go through, aside from the abusive behavior itself.

People are put through traumatic events in their lives for reasons that no one can determine. Being put through something that causes you harm can be difficult. On the road to recovery one of the first things a victim has to do is learn how to forgive the individual that caused them pain.

In order to heal from a traumatic occurrence, forgiving the individual that caused you pain is the only way to move on. True, forgiving someone that hurt you in some form can be hard, but through forgiveness comes the strength of healing. One thing that you must not confuse with forgiveness is forgetfulness. Just because you forgive someone does not mean that you have forgotten what they have done to you.

There are too many victims that like to place all of the blame for the traumatic occurrences that they were forced to go through on themselves. Blaming yourself is the wrong thing to do. You are not responsible for what happened to you. The only thing that you are responsible for is going to be the way that you deal with everything after the entire ordeal has occurred.

There are more women that are put into sexually abusive situations than men. But, just because studies show that more women are forced to go through these times does not mean that there are not men out there that share the same hurt as women do. Men are just less likely to reach out for help in comparison to women.

There are some people that like to pretend that the traumatic events that they were forced to go through never occurred. They try everything in their power to push the events to the backside of their minds. Even though this is a proactive approach to overcoming the abusive situation that you were once in, it can be harmful as well.

The only way to be able to overcome the situation you were forced into is going to be to reach out to someone for help. There are a lot of recovery programs that are designed to help men and women who have been victims of traumatic occurrences get through what that event has done to them. No one can forget what has happened to them in the past that caused them harm, but they can move forward away from the situation.

Learning how to overcome sexual abuse is going to be an uphill battle. You will need to receive outside help from a professional that you can speak in confidence with. Attempting to overcome the issue on your own is not possible, but there are people and organizations that you can reach out to that help you.
