Making a decision and taking the risk that comes along does need a fair amount of courage.
I've recently landed in a situation which I call DILEMMA.
I am a contented Financial Planning & Analysis Manager with a good career future with the current company and have built a strong bond with direct superior, who is a mentor and a friend. Because of this bond, loyalty to her built up in the background in silence.
In spite of being a part of the high potential human capital pool with the current company, I never stop testing my market value and the standing of my skills set in the market for similar role and job scope, mainly by talking to head hunters in exploring new job opportunities and attending interviews. That was how I got myself trapped in the dilemma recently. A high profile role was offered to me by a company of a well known Global Fortune 500 companies and to make it more tempting, it is an industry I have been dreaming to dive in.
Stay or leave? Loyalty or Dream Job? Here is what I did to firm up a decision:-
Clarify with Boss
In one of the occasions, I casually asked some questions that helped in making a wise choice. One of it was what is her plan for my career in the company. The other critical question was to what extend changes would happen in areas the team has been suffering a lot at work. The point is, ask questions on areas matter most if I was to stay on.
Let the Mind Does the Work
List down all factors favourable and unfavourable to the new offer or the other way around. Either way works. The category with the highest factors clearly state the choice-to-be if I was thinking right and sane!
Listen to the Heart
Make a decision based on the choice that made the heart leaped and put a smile on the face.
In this case, I have chosen Loyalty. It is a choice with consequence I am ready to face because either way, I won't lose. Loyalty to someone whom I call a mentor means more learning and skills more polished.
I trust I am still a winner!
So, making a decision and taking the risk that comes along does need huge amount of courage but leading a life not taking risk is as good as leading a regretful life.
