How To Measure Success

Each person defines success in a different ways. While there may be various personal definitions of success, we can each measure our own success based on how it makes us feel, as well as how it makes us feel about ourselves. Maya Angelou explained it this way, "Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it." Success is not a specific goal, but rather the desirable result of a productive journey. For example, simply making a lot of money, or receiving much fame, or achieving some positive result, does not automatically guarantee us personal success.

1. Before any of us can begin to measure, or even consider whether we have achieved success, or are successful, we must analyze and determine our goals, desires and needs. What would signify success for some often does not have the same result for others, so it is easily understood why the concept of success is such a difficult one to achieve, or even define. One can only truly consider himself successful if his actions have given him pleasure, a sense of well being, and adds to one's sense of personal belief, confidence, self- liking and satisfaction.

2. Success is never solely about one's results, either. Are you satisfied with your journey, and how you got to that point? Have you liked what you have done, as well as the associated results? Do you enjoy what you do, and are you satisfied and pleased with the course life has set out for you, or more importantly, the course you have set out for yourself? Do you truly feel good about yourself and what you do?

In reality, regardless of what transforms itself as success to an individual, personal success is a form of inner heroism. Who is your hero, and what makes them a hero? If you did not include yourself in that list, then chances are you do not truly think of yourself as being a success. Although Dictionary.com defines success as a noun that means, "1. the favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors; 2. the attainment of wealth, position, honors or the like..," true success requires far more than that. True success is not only a noun, but also a verb, because success is a journey, and an active one at that. Whatever success means to you, when you have achieved it, the way you'll know is by how it makes you feel. If and when you achieve that point, savor the moment of satisfaction.
