Are You Reactive Or Proactive In Managing Your Time?

Do you also feel that there is so much to do and you don't know how to manage within available time? Very often, right from the minute you arrive at work, waiting for you are issues to deal with, phone messages and e-mails to be answered and people seeking your help. Enough of all of them to leave you exhausted even before you have started... And, the situation is no different at home!

You go on tacking the issues as they come, just like fire fighting. As a "reaction", you are left with no option; but to work long hours, day in and day out. The result - lots of stress, still pending work and apparently no way out.

Naturally (you feel) that "planning' is not the answer! Where is the time to plan? That reminds me of a young man, running with a bicycle. When asked why he doesn't ride the bike, his answer was that he was in tearing hurry and had no time to ride the bicycle. You can see that what could have been a help for him to save time, was being considered as a burden. It was rather slowing down his speed.

Same is the problem with a tool called planning, which helps you to take charge and become proactive. When you choose to being reactive, you are in fact giving in to circumstances instead of being in command. You get drowned in all the work with every issue appearing to be urgent, which needs to be handled by you yourself. Just think, had you planned it in time, could it not have been delegated... or may be tackled at "bud" level requiring much less time and effort?

Are you really too busy to plan? Or too busy not to plan? It is said that if you are failing to plan, in fact you are planning to fail! Being reactive puts you in a spot, where all the tasks appear to be of high importance and high urgency, leaving you with no choices. Simple planning techniques like "learning to say NO", "prioritization" and "clarifying requests" can shift you from "reactive" mode to "proactive" and save you a lot of time... AND stress.

Reduced level of stress makes you more effective and thus saves you further time. Thus the biggest benefit of being proactive rather than reactive is that you can focus on the tasks that have high impact on your organization, your family and YOU. It is all of a question of reversing the spiral from negative to positive.

You can do it. The only requirement is a clear will to improve and seek help if you don't know how.
