Probably one of the hardest aspects of career advancement for some is networking. You need to be friendly, outgoing, interesting, and able to draw others to you. Basically, all the easiness of your comfort zone needs to be abolished. There is good news though! You have resources such as Facebook and LinkedIn at your disposal. Keep it professional and engaging. Avoid talking only about yourself, as people will not want to reply to you. Networking in person can be just as effective, if not more, so don't neglect it.
Stand Out
You should ask yourself, "Do I stand out amongst my peers?". If you can honestly say, yes!. That's great, keep doing what you are doing, if it's for positive reasons. If you "blend" with the rest of your co-workers, it's wise to find ways that you can differentiate yourself. There are many ways to do this but none seem to be more successful than being more vocal. You job is to have "presence". You should express yourself as appropriate, offer up ideas, communicate clearly, and at audible tones. Look at people in the eye and shake their hand.
Jump -ship
Gone are the days were you should stay working for the same company for 20-30 years trying to climb the ladder. Some may disagree with me on this one but I want to share a secret with you. CEO's don't work for the same company climbing the ladder anymore. Take a look at Bank of America for example. The longest lasting corporate manager has only been with the company for a few short years. Most other executives are 1-2 year employees. They came from other companies, getting a fatter salary with each jump that they take. If you want to promote fast, and make money, you should do the same.
Avoid Overworking
I have seen people come in on their days off, work during lunch time unpaid, and carrying the business on their shoulders like it was their very own child when in fact, they are nothing more than a pawn. Hard working is a great quality everyone should possess, but do not let yourself get caught in a web of pure hard work with no recognition. You should focus on working smart, rather than working hard. A hard worker is usually an over worked worker. Does that sound like something you want to be?
Happiness
To truly be successful, your career needs to make you happy. Your fat salary, nice card, and big house mean nothing if you spend most of your time in a career that you despise. This is often one of the most overlooked aspects when people first choose a career. They often go for what pays the most, rather than what they would enjoy doing. Keep this in mind if you are in a career right now, or you are currently looking for one!
