Sometimes things are just better swallowed in small doses.
So here are 5 small steps to creating order and organizing your life.
1. Put Things Where They Go: Simple enough, right? Everything has a place. Use a file... put it back... as soon as you're done. Wear a pair of shoes, put them back in the closet when you're done... don't just kick them off in the middle of the floor. Result: you don't create huge piles of stuff that becomes overwhelming after a few days.
2. Order Increases Comfort: I don't know about you, but clutter makes me irritable. If I'm surrounded by a bunch of clutter, slowly but surely I start to notice that I'm feeling antsy on the inside. When you walk into an orderly room, you just feel better... things just feel "right".
3. Increased Order Equals Increased Productivity: Another no-brainer. If you aren't constantly searching in piles of papers for that one missing letter, receipt, notice or whatver, you are saving time. Simple.
4. Don't Let Other People's Disorder Affect You: Sometimes this is hard to do but, I deal with people who are not as organized as I am everyday. Their disorder doesn't have to wreck my day. You've heard the saying "your lack of planning does not make an emergency for me" (I paraphrased it - smile). Anyway, there are times when someone gives me something that has to be done "right away" and I have such a Type A personality that when I take on the task I can feel myself getting EXTREMELY frustrated if it's pushing my schedule behind. Extremely frustrated. Well, I learned to start asking questions first. How soon do you really need this done? Have you given me all of the pieces I need to get it done? Can I give it to you at this time instead? When I do this, I now take control of my day back and I'm not feeling overly pressed to get "all this" done.
5. Order Eliminates Stress & Agitation: This is similar to my number 2 above. Have you ever spent 45 minutes of your morning searching for something and by the time you found it, you were highly agitated and for the next 2-3 hours you had to keep reminding yourself to calm down. It kinda ruins your morning, right?
I once read a book where the author said that every tiny act of your life will increase order or disorder around you. You can get anywhere you want to go if you take enough small steps. Take time to create order in your life. Four quarters always add up to a dollar. You get enough quarters and you'll have a lot of dollars in your pocket. Implement enough small changes to create order and the payoff will be huge!
